This 3D poetry artwork uses a ChatGPT-generated poem created by a prompt requesting “a poem using fortune cookie-like phrases to convey the future of technology.” Barb used the ChatGPT-generated poem as the starting point for her erasure poem. Erasure poetry, also known as blackout poetry, is a form of found poetry where a poet takes an existing text and erases, blacks out, or otherwise obscures a large portion of the text, creating a wholly new work from what remains.

This artwork recognizes that we are at a critical time in history as we are willingly handing control of our future over to technology. Like a fire spreading out of control, technology is just below the surface of almost everything we do. ChatGPT may be able to produce a poem that some people might find impressive with its rhyming and length, but is it what we want for creative expression? What price do we pay when technology takes over creativity? Can genuine innovative and creativity be reduced in “0s” and “1s”? Does it make you nostalgic for the analog days when predictions for the future were served up in a fortune cookie?!
